French Pantry Restaurant Review
By far, my favorite place to eat. It’s only open during lunch and only Monday-Friday so get there early!

Tijuana Flats Restaurant Review As far as fast food Mexican goes, this place is the new standard. Super fresh, great service and the “Taco Tuesdaze” special is awesome.
TacoLu Restaurant Review – By far, the best Tacos in Jacksonville. If you go here, you have to try the Bangin’ Shrimp Taco. They are prepared by unicorns, they are that mythical.

Ruth’s Chris Steak House Restaurant Review While this is on the pricey side, the value is good.  Definitely the best steak I have ever had, outside of my house of course! Lots of options and if you read the comments on the review, you will see there are cheaper options.
The Capital Grille Restaurant Review A great option for some fine dining while at the St. Johns Town Center.  A little on the pricey side but you definitely get good food and great service.

Pele’s Wood Fire Restaurant Review
This is what Italian Fine Dinning is about. If you want something better than what you are used to, go here. Sit at the chef’s bar and watch it all being made, very entertaining.

Salt Life Restaurant Review Try the Poke Bowl, the tuna is flown in daily from Hawaii. Very fresh.
Nippers Beach Grille Restaurant Review Start with a “Rudy’s Bad Habit” and follow it up with their Baked Oysters for your appetizer and you won’t be disappointed.

Sonny’s Real Pit BBQ Restaurant Review They have the meatiest ribs in Jacksonville. Plus they now have mustard based BBQ sauce. Definitely a must.

Sweet Tooth
Sweet Pete’s Restaurant Review Their sea salt caramels are the best! Ask anyone who’s been there.
Sweet! by Holly Restaurant Review The best cupcakes I have ever had and I don’t even like cupcakes! So that says it all. I crave them now.
Dreamette Restaurant Review This is what Dairy Queen wishes it was. There is a reason this place has been around forever, it’s that good.

Kickbacks Gastropub Above average food, the best meatloaf in town, and tons of beer. Neat place!
Firehouse Subs Restaurant Review
Best subs in Jacksonville and they are a Jacksonville based company! Win Win.
Cinotti’s Bakery Restaurant Review They have BACON DONUTS! Also, they have the best King Cake in Jacksonville. If you are from Louisiana, you know what that’s about.
BlackFinn Grille Restaurant Review Great atmosphere. Sit outside and listen to live music or sit in one of their 3 different themed rooms. It’s not crazy expensive, jeans and a shirt is fine for clothing.

I love food and I love to make people laugh. This blog started out as a place for me to just vent about some crappy food and turned out that I stumbled into some good food along the way.

  1. I looked for a review I just knew you had to have posted, but couldn’t find it.
Have you been to Checkers BBQ? You have got to go. It is a 1 of a kind place!
The owner / chef / Southern Cracker Gentleman — Art will make you feel so welcome and have such a fun time at his place, you will HAVE to come back.
Checkers is located on St. Augustine Road, near Phillips Hwy, in a small building in an industrial area, don’t let the outside keep you from going in, it is not a ‘pretty’ place, but man, the food, and the amount of food, and the “entertaining way” Art has with all his customers is awesome! Check out his website to find the times of the different buffets — Sunday buffet is $7.99 and it is AUCE and he even has you pack up some to take home!! You have just got to go if you haven’t already.

  2. I forgot to mention, it would be wise to make reservations, especially for the Fri night & Sat night seafood buffet and get there early on Wednesday for the lunch buffet — I’ve know people who have actually taken off on a Wednesday, just to go and eat. Art expects you to stay, and encourages you to stay until the buffet closes. Also, you can BYOB of whatever you’d like. His fried shrimp is scrumptious! And his special Art Crackers — cookies with his own flavorings, are like my kids say “the Bomb”. No, Art is not paying me to advertise — it is just sooo good.

    1. Mr. Jax Food Critic ~ I agree with Karen, Crackers on St Augustine Rd. (close to Emerson) is a true dining experience. Make reservations and go with a group on a Friday night. It will be a fun evening and Art, the chef is a trip. Plan to stay a while. I think that they ring the dinner bell at 6:30. I’m sure that you will love it. On another note, I’m looking for good local places for breakfast and please don’t say “The Metro”. I think that it’s way over rated! Some day you should check out The Doughnut Shop in Arlington on University near the Matthews Bridge. I no longer eat doughnuts, but this place makes the best in town.

      1. I just recently had brunch at Pele’s Wood Fire and it was pretty good. I’m going to start a whole search for the best brunch and I’m sure this will be at the top of my list. If you stop by there, get the bottomless mimosa’s for $10 and their breakfast pizza. I also hear that The Fox is a good breakfast joint.

I will try out the Donut Shoppe, I have heard great things about it!

  3. Mr. Jax Food Critic you stated that;
“Sonny’s Real Pit BBQ Restaurant Review They have the meatiest ribs in Jacksonville”
Totally incorrect. Treemendous BBQ has way meatier ribs than any Sonny’s place ever thought of having. treemendous BBQ has 2 locations in Jax/Duval county, one on Herlong Rd near the airfield and one in Baldwin on Beaver St. give them a try. They also have great beef brisket. BTW I agree wityh Karen also, Crackers BBQ is the bomb go for the Friday or Saturday night seafood buffet. it’s awesome.

  4. Mr. Jax Food Critic ~ I have a couple of places I think you should try. I do not see them listed on here (Searched).

The first is “The Tree Steak House” in Mandarin. Probably the best Steak in Jax and their Salad Bar is amazing also (and I am not big on salad either). The steaks are cut from the loin at your table and cooked on a fire grill right in plain view.

Second: “Rosie’s” for Mexican food on Old St. Augustine Rd. / 295 (by Lowes).
    great Mexican food.

Third: Clarks Seafood in Mandarin… Awsome food and great atmosphere. They even have a live alagator inside…

    1. I’m not big on steak, but I went to the Tree a long time ago. I remember it as being good. I agree with Rosie’s and Clark’s!
He needs more reviews for Mandarin, period. We don’t even have a TAB! Doing a search for Mandarin, gave me four reviews, two in Southside (not Mandarin), one closed place (Woody’s), and a BBQ place (Dickie’s).
There are LOTS of good eats in Mandarin.

        1. No problem. One thing we know how to do in Mandarin, is eat! There’s something for everybody. I hope that you enjoy what the area has to offer, as much as I do.

  5. For ice cream, I would recommend that you try Three F(x) Ice Cream and Waffles off Baymeadows and Southside. They “cook” it front of you.

  6. Try the taquitos at La Catrachita. Get them Honduran style. The place is a hole in the wall. Bring Cash! 4812 Atlantic Blvd Jacksonville, FL 32207.

  7. YOu must try the Fox in Avondale. Get the ‘Nam Burger! It is a must! hamburger, chorizo, onion ring, fried egg and sriracha sauce!
