Mojo Bar-B-Que Restaurant Review

Ok, once I told everyone what I thought of this place, they all told me that I went to the wrong location.  This is going to be a quick and to the point review. So, with that in mind, this is my review on Mojo Bar-B-Que off of University Blvd:

1607 University Blvd W
Jacksonville, FL 32217
(904) 732-7200

Location: The shopping center located on University Blvd and Hendricks. It’s the same shopping center that Tijuana Flats is located in.

Kid Friendly? Yes, tons of kids running around and it was pretty loud in there.

Food: Having never been here, all this was a shot in the dark. My son ordered the Kid’s Meal of a Grilled Cheese Sandwich, Cheese Grits and a side of Mac & Cheese (Forgot to get a pic of the menu for this item). He loved the grilled cheese (don’t all kids?), didn’t like the grits and my son LOVES grits. He seemed indifferent on the Mac & Cheese and when I tried it, it didn’t seem like anything special. I probably wouldn’t order it as a side again.

The wife and my mother (NOT the same person lol) split the Pulled Pork Shoulder $10. This came with two sides and they chose the sweet potatoes and the green beans. The helping of pulled pork was huge, especially for this price. I was really surprised by this. The down side to having such a big helping? The pork was awful. It was ice cold. I’m not talking about it being room temperature, I’m talking about it was actually colder. The only thing I can think of is that they must have run out and pulled something out of the fridge and didn’t give it enough time to come up to temp in the pit? I have no idea. The sweet potatoes were good and tasty and the beans were fresh. I loved the Texas Toast, I stole one of theirs.

I ordered the Shrimp and Grits for $15 (Menu Description: Fresh Mayport Shrimp sauteed with Tasso Ham, smoked tomatoes, mushrooms and caramelized onions over garlic cheddar grits and one side). These were the runniest grits I have ever had. It was almost like soup. The taste was there, but I just couldn’t get past how soupy they were. The ham was nice and salty and the shrimp were seasoned well and large. Maybe I just got a bad batch? I really don’t know what to think of this place.

The Good:
- I’m struggling here. I hear so many people talk about this restaurant but say this is a bad location.
- Large portion of pulled pork

The Bad:
- Soupy Grits
- Cold pulled pork
- Food was overall unremarkable

I will have to try the location in Avondale, everyone swears by it. Maybe the company needs to take a look at this location if everyone I talk to says “oh, you went to the wrong one, that location is horrible”.

I love food and I love to make people laugh. This blog started out as a place for me to just vent about some crappy food and turned out that I stumbled into some good food along the way. I'm a father of 2, husband, and master of nothing.

  1. “The wife and my mother(not the same person)” Glad to hear that you aren’t living out a Jacksonville version of Oedipus Rex. :)

I’ve never been to the University Mojo location but I didn’t think much about the Avondale location. The food is pretty good but not great. Perhaps other people like the atmosphere which is kind of like the Brick but a bit darker and with Barbeque.

  2. I went to the same one you did and did not have as bad a time as you did but I also found it to be “meh”. The Mojo’s in fleming island seems to be better but I have been there twice and I got the briskit sandwhich both times. It was very good.

  3. I’m a bit surprised about the supposed reputation of this location. Combined with takeout, we’ve frequented them 6-8 times and have been pleased with the food at every occasion. I always get the mac and cheese as my side, perhaps it was just a bad night for you.

My one piece of constructive criticism for your reviews would be that a number seem to be based on a single visit. As you know, “mainstream” reviewers rely on multiple visits to get a better idea of the food quality throughout the menu and the service. While that is unreasonable for Capital Grille or Seasons 52, I think a place like Mojos or the other more casual eateries would be possible. Though I know one can be expected to eat out only so often.
